Twilight By Stephanie Meyer
Available in The Swift Current Library?: Yes
General topics: Friendship, Love, Relationships, Family, Vampires, Folklore
Rating out of 5: 3.5/5

Summary: Isabelle (Bella) Swan moves from very sunny Phoenix, Arizona where she lived with her mother and her mother's new husband, to rainy, damp Forks, Washington to live with her father, Charlie, because she wants her mother to travel with her new husband, who is a minor league baseball player. Bella attracts a lot of attention at her new school, and looked at as popular just because she's from out of town. Much to her dismay, several boys in the school compete for shy Bella's attention, as Bella likes to blend into the background and be a wallflower. When Bella sits next to Edward Cullen in class on her first day of school, Edward seems disgusted by her. After tricking a family friend, Jacob Black, into telling her local tribal legends, Bella concludes that Edward and his family are vampires. Edward reveals that he initially avoided Bella because the scent of her blood was so desirable to him, and his family drinks the blood of animals, not humans. Over time, Edward and Bella fall in love.Their relationship is put to the test when another vampire coven sweeps into Forks and James, a tracker vampire, decides that he wants to hunt Bella for sport. The Cullen’s plan to distract the tracker and Bella is sent to hide in a hotel in Phoenix. Bella then gets a phone call from James in whom he says that he has her mother, and that Bella must give herself up to save her. She does so and James attacks her, but Edward, along with the rest of the Cullen family, rescues Bella before James can kill her. Upon returning to Forks, Bella and Edward attend their prom and Bella expresses her desire to become a vampire, which Edward refuses to let happen.

Good Points:

- The story is well written for Junior Youth
- The author has a good writing style, and it's easy to get lost in the book
- The characters are, for the most part, realistic
- A very interesting interpretation on vampires

Bad Points:
- I find the main character to be annoying
- The book moves very slow in the beginning
- The 'love' plot is a little bit unrealistic

Overall Review:
Although I am not the biggest fan of the original Twilight book, I like the rest of the series, and the book is well written for the first novel the author had ever written. When I first read it, I got lost hopelessly in the book. I stayed up late reading it and I was addicted as soon as the rival coven appeared. This book is a great stepping stone to kick off the rest of a fantastic series that has got almost the whole world hooked on it. The only thing I didn't like was reading the book in Bella's point of view, because she's quite whiny in my opinion.
